CMH Role: Co-Underwriter and Strategic Investor
Founded in 1998, Viridian is the largest electric power generator and supplier in Northern Ireland. A private placement for GBP 249.500 million was launched in 2007 offering investors the opportunity to invest in Viridian.
Viridian is engaged in the whole range of the energy business, from electric power generation to transmission and distribution as well as high voltage electrical contracting and services. The group has a turnover of circa GBP 1 billion and employs around 1,500 staff. The activities of Viridian are conducted through four principal business units:
Northern Ireland Electricity (“NIE”) - the transmission and distribution of electricity in Northern Ireland (“NI”). |
NIE Energy - power procurement through the Power Procurement Business (“PPB”) and supply of electricity through NIE Energy Supply. |
Powerteam - high voltage electrical contracting and other infrastructure services, principally to NIE, but also to a range of third-party utility and industrial customers. |
Viridian Power & Energy (“VP&E”) - generation in the Republic of Ireland (“RoI”) and supply in the competitive electricity and gas markets in both NI and the RoI. |
NIE owns and manages the Northern Ireland electricity infrastructure and connects 785,000 customers via a transmission and distribution network stretching 45,000 kilometers. It is currently working on the development of a 400 KV interconnector, which will increase the connectivity between the electricity networks of NI and the RoI in 2009.
VP&E through its power station in Huntstown, Dublin was the first independent generator in the Republic of Ireland, with a capacity of 343 megawatts capable of supplying around 10% of the Republic’s electricity needs. A second plant, a 400MW gas fired power generation plant, was commissioned in October 2007 which more than doubled VP&E’s power generating capacity. In April 2008, VP&E completed the acquisition of a firm operating a 24MW wind farm and is developing 101MW in the RoI.
